Anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric disorder in the United States. Almost one in five people in the United States suffer from an anxiety disorder. I feel that people don’t talk about how painful anxiety disorders are. They are painful. Symptoms of anxiety can be triggered during intense times, such as this Coronavirus pandemic, or a life change, or a current or anticipated stressful event. But most anxiety disorders are treatable. Psychotherapy and some medications have been shown to be effective in decreasing the severity of anxiety symptoms. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that has been shown to work . CBT addresses how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all related. CBT teaches tangible skills to start decreasing feelings of anxiety early on in treatment. A significant reduction in anxiety symptoms has been shown to take effect in 8-12 weeks of CBT with a trained psychotherapist. Education about anxiety disorders is also important. With knowledge comes power. The power to feel better. No one should feel shame because of anxiety. You are not alone.

You should always seek professional help if you are feeling like your symptoms are interfering with your functioning-work, school, relationship, or home life functioning. And you should always seek professional help if you are experiencing thoughts of hurting yourself or anyone else.
